My work is inspired by mathematics and nature: mind and body. And I hope it incorporates my feelings about both. To work in either one exclusively for very longto present only geometry, or only raw feelingsis not enough. I see humans as a mysterious combination of pure mindthe internal computerand pure naturediscrete bits in the biological soup. Our feelings respond to both: delight at an interesting geometry, at the solution to a puzzle, the understanding of a communication; and a visceral response to our environment and our experiences; love or rejection, beauty or ugliness, comfort or discomfort, threat or safety, success or failure, and our memories of all these. To have found a way of working that incorporates all of this is exhilarating and satisfying. I also feel fortunate in finding the perfect medium for me. I have degrees in studio art, fashion design and landscape architecture, and, oddly enough, all of this diverse training has come together in my fabric art. It has enabled me to work with fabric, with geometry, with color, design and drafting, with stitching, drawing and painting. Although I do not make traditional patchwork quilts, I feel a profound connection to the generations of women who have poured their creativity into useful and beautiful quilts for their families, and in the process have forged links to the other women in their communities. This tradition is alive and healthy on Martha's Vineyard, where I live, and I owe a lot to the women here who get together to stitch (usually each on her own project, but sometimes on a joint project to support a specific cause), to laugh, complain, exchange books and bits of knowledge and generally nurture and support one another. Maybe it's this kind of atmosphere that is at the base of our positive feelings about quilt art. |
