In the 1970's, mathematicians announced that all possible five-sided figures (pentagons) that will tessellate had been found. A housewife with only a high school education read this, rose to the challenge, and discovered four more. Except for the borders, tree trunks and branches, every piece in this quilt is the same size and shape: one of Marjorie Rice's tessellating pentagons. There are some hand-dyed fabrics, and it is free-motion machine quilted.
