LECTURE: This is a design technique developed for quilters based on a game the artist M. C. Escher devised to play with his young son. It uses a square with three (or four) lines across it combined with tumbled copies of itself to make a network over the quilt. The result looks very complex, without being difficult to make. The lecture explains the rules of the game, demonstrates how the squares and the quilts are designed, and shows some quilts made by the speaker and others. Audience members receive a design kit sheet to take home and try out. Thirty to fifty minutes.

HALF-DAY WORKSHOP: The goal of the workshop will be to understand how strip and tumble squares and quilts are designed and to leave with an original quilt design along with the confidence to proceed to the final product. Anyone can do this; you don't have to be an artist. The participant may use an existing strip and tumble square design and organize it into a new overall quilt design, or she may start with an entirely original arrangement of strips on the square. Two hours. No sewing.

FULL-DAY WORKSHOP: The goal of the workshop will be to design a strip and tumble quilt, using an existing or an original square, and to cut and begin to sew it. A materials list will be provided upon contract. Five hours (9:30 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:30). Extra time if needed.
