LECTURE: If you assume a quilt is a giant jigsaw puzzle in which
every piece is the same size and shape, you have a tessellation. A quilt
made of squares all the same size is the simplest tessellation, but of
course there are much more complicated tessellating shapes. This lecture
defines tessellation and demonstrates several ways to design a tessellating
shape. Participants will design a few of their own, if they wish. Fifty
minutes.
HALF-DAY WORKSHOP: The goal of the workshop is to understand and experiment with a number of ways of designing tessellating shapes. Does not require drawing skill; only a willingness to try a new thing. The participant will leave with her own tessellations and ideas for quilts. Two hours. No sewing. FULL-DAY WORKSHOP: The goal of the workshop is to understand and try out a number of ways of designing tessellating shapes, to choose one and design a quilt, and to begin cutting and sewing. Help with curved lines and Y seams. Five hours (9:30 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:30). Extra time if needed. |
