The geometric basis for this quilt is a tessellation found in a mathematics book by Grunbaum and Shepard called Tilings and Patterns (Freeman, 1987). I call it a "stretched pentagon". The shape has one long side and four short, equal sides, and this is the only known arrangement of this shape that tessellates. Note that "Sea/Shore" is made from the same shape presented horizontally.
